Growth and instability of area, production and productivity of sugarcane in Maharashtra

Abstract:
The present investigation emphasizes growth and instability of sugarcane in Maharashtra. Sugarcane is the important cash crop of the Maharashtra. The districtwise growth rates of area, production and production of the sugarcane for each district as well as regionwise as a whole years of study period of 56 years viz., 1960-61 to 2015-16 using log liner production function. Sugarcane production was increased mainly due to area expansion and slightly because of productivity improvement for districts viz. Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara, Pune, Solapur, Beed, Osmanabad, Dhule, Jalgaon, Aurangabad, Nagpur, Parbhani and Akola. While, production was increased only due area expansion for few districts viz. Ahmednagar, Latur, Nashik and Jalna. The growth rate of productivity for these districts declines over period of time.
