A study on marketing of summer tomato in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra

Abstract:
Tomato is one of the most important protective food crops in India and it is the world’s largest vegetable crop and known as protective food both because of its special nutritive value and also because of its wide spread production. Tomato is also important commercial and dietary vegetable crop and is protective supplementary food. As it is short duration crop and gives high yield, it is important from economic point of view and hence area under its cultivation is increasing day by day. In case of World tomato production, China ranks first followed by India, America, Turkey, Egypt, Iran, Italy, Brazil and Spain. In Maharashtra, total area under tomato during year 1985-86 was 22,364 hectares, which increased to 50,000 hectares and production was 1200 thousand ton for the year 2013-14. The present study revealed that the marketing cost of tomato Rs/q. A study was conducted at Ahmednagar district, Maharashtra to identify tomato marketing channels, analyze marketing margin and investigate the different marketing intermediaries. The average per quintal cost of marketing of summer tomato through channel-I, channel-II, channel-III were ₹ 147.50, ₹ 180.00 and ₹ 364.60, respectively. Price spread in marketing of summer tomato was maximum in channel-III due to large chain of intermediaries. Price received by the producer was maximum (₹ 1952.50 /qtl.) in channel-I followed by channel-II (₹ 1670/qtl.) and Channel-III(₹ 1285.40/qtl.), respectively.
