Abstract:
This study was designed to elucidate the toxicity of Dolichos biflorus seed extract in ethylene glycol induced renal stone in experimental rats. In toxicity evaluation, no mortality or any toxic reaction was recorded in any group after 28 days of administering the extracts at (300 and 3000 mg Kg−1 BW). The extracts did not cause any behavioural or physical changes in experimental rats. The results shows that the extract has nephroprotective effect and lowers the serum concentration of creatinine, BUN, calcium and phosphorus significantly (p<0.001) as compared to untreated group. In untreated group II, the concentration of serum creatinine, BUN, calcium and phosphorus was recorded to be between the positive group and extract treated group (300mg/kg group). The study contributes to establishing the nontoxic quality parameters of Dolichos biflorus seed extract and the results suggest the safety of the extracts in upto 10 times of therapeutic use.
