Abstract:
Twenty six marigold genotypes were evaluated for twenty qualitative and quantitative characters to assess the association of yield components and their direct and indirect effects on flower yield. Correlation and path coefficient analysis indicated that the characters viz., plant height, number of primary branches per plant, photosynthetic rate, duration of flowering, flower weight, number of flowers per plant and harvest index exhibited positive significant correlation (genotypic and phenotypic) with flower yield per plant. The highest positive direct effect towards flower yield per plant was exerted via plant height followed by harvest index, flower weight, 1000-seed weight, shelf life of flower, number of primary branches per plant, number of flowers per plant, duration of flowering and photosynthetic rate. The present investigation indicated that these characters are important in deciding the flower yield per plant. Hence these characters may be considered as selection indices for deciding flower yield per plant and might be considered as selection indices in marigold improvement programme.
