Abstract:
Both Chilli and bell pepper comes under the species Capsicum annuum L. The present investigation entitled “Genetics of Inheritance of growth, yield and male sterility in Capsicum annuum L. were carried out at Research and Experimental Farm of Department of Vegetable Science, Dr. Y. S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan, H.P. The material included chilli genotypes DKC-12A and DKC-12ms which were male sterile and crossed with male fertile varieties of bell pepper i.e., California Wonder and HC-201. The characters studied were plant height, number of branches, leaf length (cm), leaf width (cm), days to 50% flowering, days to fruiting and fruit yield per plant (g). Analysis of variance showed significant variation among various crosses for leaf length, leaf width and yield/plant. F1's performed in between the parental lines except for yield/plant. Generally F2's showed inbreeding depression and B1 and B2 behaved as per expectations. Generation mean analysis revealed that selection will be effective in improvement of plant height, leaf length, leaf breadth, days to 50 per cent flowering and days to fruiting. Both selection and heterosis breeding will be effective in the improvement of number of branches at first node and yield per plant. There was dominance of male fertility over sterility and showed monogenic inheritance. On the basis of present findings, it appears that DKC-12A and DKC-12ms can be used to incorporate male sterility into bell pepper.
